Revolutionising Energy Use: Unveiling Our Groundbreaking Sustainable Microgrid Project
Updated: Sep 27
Welcome to the future of sustainable energy. We are thrilled to introduce our innovative microgrid project designed to revolutionise energy use on farms. By harnessing the power of renewable biogas from agricultural waste, leveraging solar energy, and incorporating batteries, our microgrid offers a cutting-edge solution that is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective for farmers.
Sustainable Energy at Its Best
Our microgrid isn't just about providing power; it's about transforming how we think about energy consumption. By converting agricultural waste into renewable biogas, we are reducing greenhouse gas emissions and empowering farmers to generate energy from resources that were once considered waste. This unique approach allows farmers to cut costs, increase revenue, and create a sustainable energy source.
Key Benefits
✅ Energy Self-Sufficiency : Our microgrid enables farms to become self-sufficient in energy production.
✅ Reduced Air Pollution : By utilising renewable energy sources, we contribute to decreasing air pollution and environmental impact.
✅ Economic Empowerment : Small and medium-sized farms can benefit from reduced energy costs and new revenue streams.
Collaborating for a Greener Future
At the heart of this groundbreaking project is collaboration. We are proud to be working alongside esteemed partners like Huddersfield University, Ho Chi Minh City University, and Bear Instruments. With the support of Innovate UK, our collective aim is to enhance energy resilience, reduce dependence on traditional power sources, and pave the way for a greener and more sustainable future.
Looking Ahead
As we embark on our project's next phase, we invite farmers to join our pilot programme. This pivotal step will demonstrate our microgrid's effectiveness and contribute to addressing the nation's energy challenges as we strive towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy landscape.

Glossary:
Microgrid
A microgrid is a self-contained electrical network of interconnected loads and energy
resources, which may include renewable energy sources and energy storage. The
microgrid is a controllable entity that can operate while connected to the main
electricity supply utility grid or disconnected from the grid in “island” mode. The
microgrid can serve individual buildings or localised communities and achieve
improved efficiency, reliability and resilience to grid disturbances. A core component
of the microgrid is the microgrid controller or Energy Management System (EMS)
that manages the operation of the microgrid to optimise energy efficiency and running
cost.
Second-life EV Battery
Second-life batteries are batteries that have had a previous (first) life, usually in the electric vehicle sector, but have reduced storage capacity after several years of operation. With reduced capacity, say 80% of the original as-new capacity, they are less useful for automotive use as the range of the vehicle is reduced. However, these batteries still have a useful purpose with several more years of life ahead in applications where “range” is not such an issue before they are eventually recycled. These second-life batteries will be cheaper to purchase than new ones, so they represent an economic opportunity and reduce carbon reduction.
